I always have the best intentions of writing in it, but time passes and then what I was going to write about no longer seems relevent.

Since my last post, my life has been absolutely filled to the brim with Malifaux. Since Adepticon I have attended Gen Con, where I had the joy of working at the Wyrd exibit booth for three shifts. I have to say that it was an absolute joy to be able to share my love for this game with people that were passing by. Strangely, quite a few people recognized my voice from the Through the Breach podcast. One person told me "I know you... you're internet famous!" I don't know about that, but it certainly was a kick to hear!

Working at the gen con booth is an experience like no other. There is something magical in the buzz of the crowd, and there is delight in being able to speak to hordes of MY PEOPLE and just share excitement with them. And it wasn't just experienced Malifaux players that would stop by, but just miniatures enthusiasts who loved the look of what we had, or simply people that were curious about our giant whiskey golem statue.

I am extremely excited to attend gen con again this year and volunteer my time. This time I hope to help promote the RPG (Through the Breach) because I now have quite a bit of experience playing it, and I find it absolutely phenomenal! If you haven't tried it... check it out!

I will also be attending Adepticon again this year. I loved the smaller venue and that it was more specifically focused on gaming. I already have the time off from work! The Malifaux events there were a blast, and I can't wait to participate again! Last year my husband managed to win the masters tournament, and he is feeling quite a bit of need to attempt to place well again.

This year there will be an official national championship Malifaux tournament at the Nova open. Unfortunately, this is falling over the same weekend that my brother in law is getting married so even if I (ha ha) or Nick (more likely) qualifies for the tournament, we will not be able to attend. Ah, well!

I participated in The Wyrd Place's vassal league this year, and failed horribly but had a lot of fun, and got a lot of experience using Vassal to play the game. For anyone who has difficulty finding opponents in their local area, I would highly reccomend it! It has a steep learning curve, but once you figure out the commands the games flow quite well and are easy to follow.

I have been hosting an event in my gaming store called Pizzafaux once a month for at least half a year. I give away free pizza, do demos, and anyone that plays Malifaux, buys it, or does a demo gets pizza. I'm not certain that it has actually attracted very many people, but it is fun to have a pizza night once in a while. I'm going to report this attempt to draw local players to the game as unsuccessful (and expensive) but fun!

Tuesdays and Saturdays are Malifaux playing days, and Saturday evenings are now dedicated to Through the Breach RPG run by my husband. We have seven players, so things are quite hectic, but the games are magical. I'll discuss them more later!

I have been reliably holding a Malifaux tournament every other month and inviting the Omaha players down for that. The next tournament, "Fight Night" is the last Saturday of this month. I've been ranking my tournaments over at www.malifauxrankings.com ... I invite everyone to do this as well! Its fun to see your names up on the board, and the site is brilliant!

I'm doing a demo in Grand Island Nebraska for the Grand Island Gaming Guild on 2/7, and excited to be able to try and bring the game to the good people of GI.

And that pretty much catches you up on my Malifaux happenings. My Malifaux cup runneth over!

I'll be back later to talk about my pretty plastics, and all about how I have fallen in love with the game over and over again.Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-7148200609405926302014-04-24T18:33:00.001-07:002014-04-24T18:34:22.845-07:00Adepticon Day #2Day #2 - Thursday, 4/3/2014

Today was the Malifaux Cake Match! I had a bit of difficulty finding it, but once I found out where it was, I helped usher other lost sheep toward it. I brought some terrain for one board, but it looked pitiful next to some of the other amazing boards that were there! A lot of people did a really nice job with their boards. I decided that I would like to play 20 games of Malifaux during adepticon. Because I am "running the gauntlet" and entering all events, it shouldn't be too difficult. During the cake match I got in my first four games.

My first game was against Antonio of TTB. He took McMourning and I brought Misaki as ten thunders in an attempt to play a master from every different faction for the achievement league since I will mostly be playing outcasts and arcanists for the rest of the tournaments. I ended up winning without scoring any schemes, but just on points from strategy. 2 to 1.

Everyone who was registered ended up getting an adepticon 2014 fate deck sponsored by Malifools. I was one of the artists on the deck, doing the tome suit drawings and the red joker, as well as the tome itself... which I was sad to see looked not as good shrunk down. My original tome had celtic knotwork all over it. I have heard that there are complaints about my Myrandra drawing, that it is too sexualized. But I also did hear someone exclaim "Woah, she is hot!" so I guess I have mixed reviews. BOOBIEZ!!!

My second game was against Mike from the Malifools podcast. He was using the TTB fate deck, so I decided to use the new Malifools fate deck. He brought a very nice Collodi crew, and I continued my misfit masters games by playing guild and bringing Lady Justice. I haven't seen 2E Collodi yet, or played a game against him, so it was a new experience... and a terrifying one! Thankfully Mike is a fun opponent to play, because otherwise the game would have been miserable... I got my face beaten in soundly in what ended as a 10 vs 0 VP victory for Malifools. During the middle of our game, the Malifools team won first prize for their awesome pig bomb cake! There were many yummy cakes there, and my favorite was a Teddy cake, complete with gnarly looking clear sugar candy claws and teeth.

My third game was against someone that I played at gen con last year, the fellow who actually won the avatar tournament! I decided to try out gremlins against his pandora crew (I haven't even looked at the gremlin cards before today, or played a game against them!) and again I got decimated, 10 to 0. His crew consisted of Pandora, Candy, Kade and a Doppleganger... a very unique crew using no sorrows. It was nicely effective against my poor, poor gremlins. Ophelia spent most of the time being paralyzed. At least Pere Ravage took both him and Pandora out in a blaze of green fiery glory.

My last game was a tiny 15 SS game against my husband. I took Candy, Kade and a beckoner against Francois, Raphael and a piglet. I did a bit better this time, but still lost, 5 to 2. At least I got some achievement list goals checked off, including ending the game with four cards worth 2 or lower.

I ended up getting a lot of the weird achievements done today... discarding the red joker during the draw phase, playing a round after turn 1 with my hand visible, playing a round after turn 2 with my hand face down, going a whole game without using soulstones, going a round without cheating, and many more.

Tonight we finished up with some crazy stuffed pizza... the barbecue chicken was the best! Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit the vendor hall after it was set up, and I don't believe that we will tomorrow. I fell asleep early, absolutely exhausted.
Apologies for these belated entries!

Day #1 - Wednesday, 4/2/2014

Today we set out at 4a m for the long drive to Lombard, IL. We arrived a bit before 1pm, and met with Mark and Josh of TTB before promptly heading to our hotel room for a nap. Not much was happening this day, but registration was very busy!

Unfortunately we didn't get one of the big swag bags, but we still got a smaller one that included two different minis, a book by Graham McNeill, who signed it for us, and a bottle of brush on primer.

There was one vendor open that was selling old Malifaux models at 50% off, so I picked up another Friekorp Trapper, Hamelin's Avatar, two packages of Gupps and a Hodgepodge effigy.

We went out to eat at some bar that had reduced price appetizers, and I had an Irish sour apple and some delicious jalapeno calamari. Even though we got a nap in we still fell asleep quickly once we got back!
This is particularly in light of my last post, which shows pictures of my first game of M2E - in which I was dropping scheme markers too close together! I was a bit blown away by how many people saw that post, and was a bit embarrassed to look back on the post and read my grumblings and view my mistake. But the title of this blog IS "WORST Malifaux player EVER", so I guess you all can't fault me!

So much has happened since then! And so, to catch myself back up, I'll just mention some of my major Malifaux happenings since June, when I posted last.

M2E

I played my last game of Malifaux 1.5 at Gen Con this year, and have since played nothing but M2E. I have a much better grasp of the rules now, and I am looking forward to the rules for the wave 2 models. I have not helped with the beta testing, for lack of printer ink, and because I didn't want to have to relearn stats that got altered.

I resisted M2E when it first came out, like many others. But to be honest, I hadn't yet given it a real chance. After a while it became apparent to me that I didn't want my beloved game to leave me behind, and so I caved in and moved with it. Since then, I have realized that the new rules really are a lot easier for new people to grasp! It can be difficult, however, for an old dog to learn new tricks, and I have seen a lot of frustration in players as they moved to the new edition.

I think that my biggest gripe was the new art. I still have mixed feelings about it.

Gen Con

I attended Gen Con again this year, and got to participate in the last official Malifaux tournament for 1.5! I was lucky enough to do well enough in the Governor's Mansion (Avatar Qualifier 2) tournament on Saturday to advance on to the Avatar of Malifaux tournament on Sunday! I was out in the first round of the Avatar tournament, but it was such an honor just to make it there. I've come a long way since I first started this game and I am now and then reminded that I am NOT the worst Malifaux player anymore!

The Malifaux Tournament Boards at Gen Con!

I went to Gen Con hating the art for the Viks, but once I saw them in person, I changed my mind. I picked up the Viks box set, as well as Tara's nightmare edition. I'm so happy that I got the Gen Con box with the oversized Ronin... I like having these huge amazon women to play with, and I am eager to paint them! At the raffle on Sunday, I won an Evil Baby Orphanage tin!

Henchman?

Oh, wow! I'm a henchman now! How about that? Around August we started to try to re-stir-up interest in the game in our LGS. We started out with five players, and now regularly have 8 - 12 players showing up every Tuesday. It is my hope to continue to help spread the love!

Some of our players, doing their thing! They are getting used to me photographing everything.

I ran my first tournament as a henchman in November. It was an inter-city event where I invited players from Omaha to come to Lincoln and participate in 3 round of story encounters! I will have to say that I think it was a success - even my LGS seemed surprised by the turnout... Malifaux players were everywhere! There were 18 of us. I'm hoping it will help them realize that we could be a force!

Well, it came out of nowhere but it looks like I am going to be helping out with co-hosting the Through the Breach Podcast. I'm still a bit baffled as to why anyone is letting me do this, but feel free to check out the podcast and hopefully everyone else involved will make up for my general unworthiness! My first episode is not up yet, but should be soon.

Now I have an entire different set of rules to learn, and boy does it feel a whole lot different to me.

I've heard a lot of people say that Malifaux 2.0 contains all the flavor of Malifaux, while streamlining the rules and making it much easier for new people to understand it. I'm not entirely certain how true that is at this point, but I am trying to get a few games under my belt before I decide too much.

One thing I can say with absolute certainty is I do NOT like most of the new art. In fact, when I got to the Outcast section of the stat cards, I actually started crying... one, because I am a girl - and two, because I felt like they were ripping out the personality of characters I had come to love, and replacing them with something generic. It isn't to say that the art is bad... its not bad art. Its just not Malifaux, in my opinion.

I didn't get a "western" feel. I didn't get a "steampunk" feel. I didn't get a "Victorian" feel. All I felt was "grotesque". Everything is very horror and punk, and neo-asian themed. Its almost sort of dystopian futuristic.

Case in point? The Ronin.

The Old Ronin:
One wonders exactly how they morphed from being samurai cowgirls to white girls dressed as neo-asian lingerie and bow-wearing punk sluts, but I'm sure there must be something in the fluff?

I've had people argue that this is more true to what a "ronin" should be, anyhow. Really?

At any rate, artwork aside, I played my first game of Malifaux 2.0 yesterday. My friend and I decided not to use upgrades on our crews, because we wanted to focus on the feel of the new rules before adding other things to worry about. I am not a quick learner when it comes to rules, so this worked for me. I'll try upgrades the next time I play it.

My friend Stephanie decided to play a 30ss game. She took a Sonnia crew consisting of Sonnia, Samael, 3 witchling stalkers and a purifying flame. I took an Ortega crew with Perdita, Francisco, Nino, Papa Loco, Santiago and an enslaved nephilim.

Initial thoughts on the cards: We were both weirded out by the lack of abilities on the cards. It was weird for Nino not to have trigger happy. Weird for Santiago not to have the ability to get an extra move action. Francisco as a henchman? Wow! He is no longer the 5 point model you take just to have another Ortega. And Ortega striking is mostly a thing of the past! I kind of like that. Although it really does make the Ortegas quite different for me to play.

Initial thoughts on game setup: The new deployment types are weird, but potentially fun/scary. I really like the randomization of schemes and the option of five to pick from. It really stirs things up quite a bit, and keeps people from picking the same thing over and over and over. Scheme counters will take quite a bit for me to get used to. This new poker-face-bluffing-element to schemes is a bit weird for me.

Initial thoughts on game play: Soulstones are a lot less useful! Not to say that they aren't useful at all, but... no more insane casts of 30 or more, etc.! I'm not sure how I feel about having to declare if you are using soulstones before you start flipping stuff around, but I guess with the way things are it makes sense. Its a bit of a gamble, a push in your favor. It makes soulstones go very fast, say in round two. I've watched three games of this now, and almost all soulstones are gone in round two. May need to learn to work on conservation? Are we all just too eager to use them? Being able to pre-measure everything feels cheap. I don't like it. Not at all. It takes all the risk out of what you are doing!

The game went quickly and smoothly - probably because we weren't worrying about upgrades. We had reconnoiter, and she took bodyguard on Samael, and Power Ritual. I had bodyguard on Nino, and my other scheme was Protect Territory. The Ortegas insane damage profiles quickly beat down the opposing crew, and I spent most of my time shooting, then using my enslaved nephilim to influence my own crew to keep plopping down objective markers.

Francisco protects his territory with five scheme markers at the end of the game. Maybe a bit excessive?

Papa Loco and Perdita ended with two scheme markers each. I think I nailed this scheme!

With most of her crew dead by turn three, it was easy to score points for Reconnoiter. The game ended with her at 2VP, and me at 8VP (though it would have been way more if we weren't capped at 8!)

Thoughts on the game: It feels to me like beating down the opposing crew is going to be the easiest way to VP. Less strategy, more beat down? We'll see after I get a few more games in.

My verdict so far: I like Malifaux Classic better, but I did have fun, so I'm willing to give Malifaux 2.0 another go.

A few weeks ago, I decided that no matter what anyone else was taking, I would be playing a Molly crew that day. So when I ended up in a three-player game with poor Molly Girl pitted off against Lady Justice and Lilith, I felt reasonably sorry for her - especially since I knew that I was going to be the primary target of the other two players (they were husband and wife, and rather known for trying to take out the opposition first!)

But then, something amazing happened. My dear Molly decided that she was going to kick some ass. And for some reason, the Rogue Necromancy (who I lovingly call "Ted") refused to die. Joy-of-joys, he even took Judge out in round one.

In the end, it was Molly with 6 VP, Lady Justice with 4, and Lilith with 0.

I count this double win for Molly as one of my crowning achievements in the game! I rewarded her performance by actually applauding the model. Yay!Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-90073895145243997282013-01-03T04:19:00.000-08:002013-01-03T04:19:06.885-08:00It has been a while since I have posted anything - but my months have been filled with Malifaux. Games have been coming once or twice a week, and I even got to visit the Wyrd booth at GenCon this year and participate in one of the tournaments! I'm happy to say that I came in 17/36 in my round, so I guess that means I am officially NOT the "WORST Malifaux player EVER" anymore, since I did better than half. That's good enough for me!

Sometime after April I got addicted to Kirai, and started playing her exclusively. Her playstyle just clicked for me, and to this day I have not found another master that I just instinctively get.
In late August, however, I decided that I had far too many masters piling up and not being painted or played, so I began to devote myself to one master each month - playing them exclusively, and getting them at least tournament legal for painting. I actually have a schedule drawn up through the entire year and into 2014.
September belonged to Perdita, October to Collodi, November to Sonnia and December to (who else?) Rasputina. I'll get some pics of the crews up eventually. Here is a pic of Sonnia who I decided to paint as Cruella DeVille (with dalmatians) and the top of Perdita's avatar.

January will be devoted to McCabe, because I want to get to playing him before he is released, as I purchased him during Wyrd's birthday sale, but was already busy with Raspy for the month. I really like the detail of the new plastics, but I am not as good at assembling the tiny pieces.
I'd like to get into a bit more detail about what I learned about each master so far, but that will have to come later! :)

First place achieved a perfect score. I did not think that I would do this well! I went into it hoping only to not finish last.

The faction started off with crews at 10ss, and then raised by 5ss every week, ending at 30SS crews.

I realized, however, that I have no idea how to really play Kirai in higher point games. Any ideas for a 30+ or higher crew?Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-17581264883408098332012-03-25T19:57:00.005-07:002012-04-08T08:13:28.120-07:00Kirai's Winning Streak!I haven't had a lot of time to write lately, due to work and school. In almost all of my spare time otherwise, I have been participating in a local Malifaux league, where I am happy to say that I seem to be doing well. The league has 14 players, and I believe that I and one other fellow are the only ones yet who haven't lost a game. The wins don't matter so much as the cumulative VPs, however, so I am not certain where I am ranking thus far. I had only planned on playing Kirai on week one, but I fell in love with her and haven't tried any of my other rezzers (the league is fixed faction.) Here is how it has gone for me so far:

Week 1 - Kirai vs. The Viks - Kirai wins! 4VP to 2VP
Week 2 - Kirai vs. Som'er Teeth - Kirai wins! 8VP to 0VP
Week 3 - Kirai vs. Pandora - Kirai wins! 8VP to 6VP
Week 4 - Kirai vs. Lady Justice - Kirai wins! 8VP to 0VP (opponent forfeit after 3 hours playing, but I do not believe the results would have been different, still it was terribly terribly disappointing to "win" this way.)

I believe I am playing Rasputina this week, which is the final week. I am hoping to take 2nd or 3rd place in the league, but we'll see!

I'm happy to say that I've learned a lot about Kirai, and pretty much fallen in love with playing her. I am considering running Nix in her crew this week. I'm not sure, though!Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-3676986559180121542012-02-19T12:01:00.000-08:002012-02-19T12:38:22.068-08:00Gremlins are Crazy Fun!I have been trying to get my playing up to a better standard before this Saturday when the games start, so I have mainly been focusing on my Resurrectionists, as the league is fixed faction for the next five weeks.

In between practicing my game with Kirai and picking up a few models for my Seamus crew, I managed to pick up the Ophelia box set, and tried her out for the first time last night. Chuck and Steph were at the store, so we all decided to play a team game. At first, the hubby suggested that he and I be on one team, but I felt as if it wouldn't be fair since he was playing Somer and we would have synced up so well. We all decided to randomize our opponents by drawing out one of two different colored soulstones out a hat and partnering up with whomever matched. It ended up that Steph (Perdita) and I (Ophelia) were together, and Nick (Somer Teeth) and Chuck (Kaeris) were on the other team.

Things were looking pretty dour for us ladies at first, with Nick's warpig coming along and destroying half of my models, while Steph just concentrated on keeping all of the Ortegas in cover. At least, that is, until I took Steph aside and talked a bit of strategy with her. She listened to my advice, and quickly the tables turned. I got her concentrating on objectives, and gave her a list of key models to kill, and in what order. I sort of made her burn a soulstone when she wanted to let her attack miss at a key point once. Well, I didn't make her, I suppose, but I did speak up and say "burn a soulstone", after she said she was letting it fail. I feel kind of bad for controlling her game like that, but I hope that it was a learning experience for her. It certainly was a learning experience for me! I had never watched the gremlins in action before. Ophelia can really hold her own! Pigs can be scary. And Somer Teeth kept me giggling.

I also learned that Perdita is an insanely strong master, even in the hands of someone who isn't playing her skillfully.

I'm happy to say that Steph and I triumphed over our husbands, with 4VP compared to their 2. A low scoring game, but a victory is a victory, and I'll take it! I was admittedly a bit surprised by the outcome, as Nick is better than me, and Chuck is better than Steph.

Steph is very nervous about the league games. I've been trying to coach her on what to do with Perdita, but I am not the best tactician myself. She was a bit bummed about starting out the league with a 10 point game, as the Ortegas tend to be expensive, so I bought a blister of young nephalim, and am taking one of my old chain necklaces and making her a proxy enslaved nephalim to take with her. (There isn't an enslaved nephalim at the store!) Hopefully having another model will make her feel better! I think she is planning on fielding Perdita and either Santiago or Nino.

I got Kirai based and primed last night! I think I'm going to be doing all of the spirits in grayscale. Kirai herself is going to be blonde, because the face of the model just doesn't look Japanese to me! Also, I got rid of that head at the bottom of her feet, because I didn't like it.

Its going to be an exciting week for me! Painting, painting, painting, and then a league game on Saturday!Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-92145112196419843222012-02-13T21:37:00.000-08:002012-02-13T21:56:46.354-08:00KiraiOur area's new henchman has started a fixed faction league that runs from February 25 to March 24. The league games start off at 10ss, and then every week 5ss are added.

... So for the last week and a half, I have been practicing my 10ss game. This is something that I had never thought to try before. Previously 20ss was the lowest I had ever played. There is much more to consider, I suppose... and at 10ss your options feel like they are limited. I have found, after consideration, that they aren't as limited as you immediately think, if you are creative.

I decided that I would go with Resurrectionists for my faction, as I had more ressers (Molly and Seamus) available to me to work with. My husband went with Arcanists, and my brother Tim went with Guild. Sharing our models between each other, I have access to every res master. I have been working on learning to play Nicodem, McMourning and Kirai in case I decide to use them later on.

I started playing my husband's Kirai crew over the past week as well, and I have to say that she is certainly unique. I got absolutely slaughtered my first game with her, making many mistakes in order of activation, and keeping Kirai to the back. After my husband gave me a few pointers, however, I am absolutely amazed at Kirai's effectiveness. In fact, the last game I played with her, I practically won the game in the first round, killing several of my opponents models including his master. "Establish your dominance in round one" was my husbands advice. "If you aren't winning on round one, you aren't going to win."

I'm not used to playing that aggressively, but it seems to be working for me so far. I guess time will tell!Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-49235238923379032772012-02-04T16:46:00.001-08:002012-02-04T17:22:40.764-08:00Done?? Done!The impossible has happened. I have finally declared that I am done working on a model. I've been working on my Viktorias forever, and I keep getting asked when I am going to be done with them. Well... I am not done with all of them, but I am done with ONE! I am finally happy with Sword Mistress Viktoria now that I have given her a slight costume change. I painted her up with all of the skin showing, like I am supposed to... but she just didn't look like a serious warrior to me. I'm not sure how adding a long-sleeved leotard beneath all that bikini armor makes her more badass to me, but it does. She is finally ready to go out and kick some butt.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8Uh2K5Jo-nmca7KzPSDaZUPTQevOPUzeldEj_6VJB4p2bAn0eu_M0h4wWViAEAv-Ghnq-vBkKxC863CbKnFUeKsLZgt3QcOfBp88GtjgpkZdv3wzWqlNyrY5LP_eaekRBgtd8JFnacWY/s320/viktoriafront.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705453054415692850" />

The fact that I painted on a unitard is not so glaringly obvious in person.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyu_iuwPHZD8He_OzV48gU4fUyn-yggSvKoMZQfQW8H901tjBJESrsIblaEuNVAr69QSXkBUYLL-JoUk1RaHN0EVjA4_U8TRC54mklRBuiSjIvp1ajXYRRmOM4dnk4cmyf9Xg1XD-nVh8/s320/viktoriaback.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705453058517835362" />

I've decided that I don't like looking at models close up.

This is the first model that I have finished! Since we didn't have anything with us, we ended up picking up a couple more fate decks and a tape measure, too, which is fine since we would like to do demo games for people that stop by our tables and seem interested. He grabbed Kirai's box, and I decided on Collodi. He also got a blister of additional Seishins, and I picked up a blister of stitched togethers. It is funny to note that the seishins were packaged wrong, so he has three of them that look exactly alike.

I'm not sure why I picked up Collodi... it was completely on impulse, and I don't think that prior to that moment I had been interested in him. I've played against him twice before, and while he was occasionally very annoying in an opposing crew, it never occurred to me that I might like to add him to my collection. Until then.

So now I have crews from each faction. For Guild, I have Perdita. For Neverborn, Collodi. For Resurrectionists, Molly. For Arcanists, Rasputina. And for Outcasts, the Viktorias. I don't think this is how I'm supposed to do it! I'm supposed to be concentrating on one faction! It was not actually my intent to own a crew for each faction... it simply turned out that way.

At any rate, we did end up getting a quick game in, in which my husband severely trounced me. I rushed Collodi forward into melee and then spent the rest of the game trying to get my marionettes back. I ended up killing Collodi myself to keep the hubby from getting an objective, but as it was all said and done he had scored 6VP and I had scored 3.

I've played Collodi once more since then, against my husband's Kaeris crew, and I am proud to say that this henchie vs. henchie battle ended with my victory! I was very excited to beat the hubby as he is an excellent player, and I am not so much.

Now, I will be the first to admit that I am not a fan of Collodi's colors as they appear on the box. As well, I knew that I did not want to paint all of the puppets in the same colors that I would do Collodi in... I wanted everything to be unique. Still, I wasn't sure how Collodi would be painted until I actually sat down to do it. I am pretty pleased with the results! The hubby was not a fan of the pink eyes, but I disagree with him.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqwYr2H39xszOyuxm_prkh_OY-aMBHVQCE2i7nuI3Qq9vMaCOk0sherBX8Bof6xMCW1Da9Vv76YLS4jstYSQ2q6Q6rIx7e1tWNvzKBgo2lwpfpMb-36HjIQhK55aGwJ3HI-EjnxF_guU0/s400/collodi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702364202653418050" />

I tried to put wood grain on his hands.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi26GXtjwtm8ujfwuhmYy2pLwrwEXYLMuPXoF-KGiMEAMqRz9AO66eWS3FFu5xmIX4YHP79qwRshAbcXu8_0BCoKu4HoqZquR9cvltKAC8VVF-WSFvZo9aKkJoLyfpeBvRs4j1h5RR5e44/s400/collodi2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702365260433932578" />
I'm proud of the gradient!

I also got one of the wicked dolls painted up... the one that I have been calling Kermit. I worked on the Ortegas, except Papa Loco, whose model confuses the bejeezus out of me... I can't tell what is what on him! I think I have some nice colors going on, though I got teased for making Nino's coat a shiny brown. Perdita has pony chaps.

After painting for a few hours, Tim and I decided to play a game. We settled on 25 points, and he tested out his Sonnia Criid box, adding my desperate mercenary (Farah Fawcett Ortega - hehe), and I fielded Perdita, Santiago, Francisco, Nino and a ronin. Our shared strategy was claim jump, and for schemes I chose announced Hold out, and announced Raid!. Tim chose announced Hold out, and unannounced eye for an eye.

The Ortegas did very well for the first two rounds, but on round three things started getting pretty insane. The gaming store was closing, so we had to end things quickly. I moved all my figures toward the objective marker, and he took his Sonnia and blew the crap out of them, along with his witchling stalkers, setting up a nice explody chain reaction finale.

And I'm not kidding... he cast the hell out of that spell! He ended up having a CA of 31, and even though I had a DF of 25 it was to no avail. In addition, he flipped serious damage.

After everything blew up, only Santiago and Sonnia were standing.

But... I was near the objective marker, and Sonnia was not, so I claimed victory. In addition, I had more minions than him, so that made my "Raid!" scheme successful. After VPs were added up, I had 8 and Tim had 3. YAY! It was both of our first time playing with these models.

I was so happy to see Tim have fun with Sonnia, which I bought him for Christmas. He seems to be getting quite addicted, as I planned.

I am definitely feeling more comfortable with gameplay, and don't need much help.

What I learned:
* Don't cast on Sonnia's crew.
* 2 inches between blast templates? OUCH!
* Objectives and Schemes first, screw around later.
* Perdita can matrix dodge anything. Except exploding models.Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-69948063756056127552012-01-15T08:20:00.001-08:002012-01-15T08:33:18.144-08:00Ebay Spree!So, yesterday I went on an Ebay spending spree. I ended up purchasing a Miss Demeanor (female convict gunslinger), some Rotten Belles to start to flesh out my Molly crew, and Zoraida's avatar. I think I got a good price on all of them, not astounding, but cheaper than I am going to get in a store without ripping off the seller at the same time. And the Miss Demeanor I can't get in a store! She'll be a fun addition to my Viks, which I have already been playing very shoot-y, and give me another option if I want to play around with what I'm taking.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 194px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic2z2Lzxx5ZxdXPAXoE8uLiHUUXKVtH8U__G77rhuEgbDj-zn2TRmhd1meVpKvnsPqvn92Ma6XGPbppe9NnlR-L7OeJNpBfThKMkqf7FMGEO6ibG6y77tJwSy7J5y-YjBYWzp9X0F4Gao/s400/missdemeanor.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5697895358539818322" />

I'll get a better picture of her when she ships!

Molly girl is severely lacking right now with just the crooligans. I am planning on adding Seamus' alternate to the mix, and assembling a Seamus crew without having to purchase the box set.

As to Zoraida's avatar... what can I say? I think it is lovely, and I couldn't resist. Especially for the price. Zoraida is probably going to be my neverborn project when I get around to it, because my hubby is extremely interested in Pandora, which was the other one I was looking at.

I have been guilted out of purchasing regular minis on ebay again by the husband. He says we should support our local store, and now I feel bad!Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-54961834313879212592012-01-04T19:18:00.000-08:002012-01-04T19:23:48.280-08:00Nyan Loves McTavishI'm not the only one who loves McTavish. It was Chuck's first time playing Malifaux. He was most drawn to Marcus, so he hijacked him from my hubby and seemed to pick things up reasonably quickly. We had a grand time of it, and the hours passed too quickly. None of us had any New Years Eve plans this year, so when we learned the gaming store was holding a new years party and potluck dinner, my husband and my friends Steph and Chuck and I decided that we would meet again the next day and ring in the new year with less alcohol and more imaginary bloodshed.

It was a wonderful day! I arrived to the gaming store around 1pm to start work on painting my new McTavish, and Steph and Chuck arrived at about 3. So all in all we got a good 9 and 1/2 hours of gaming in! Mostly Malifaux, with a short "Munchkin Break" to entertain their child Thomas who seems a bit too young for Malifaux yet -- although my Ice Golem, Johann, and my husband's Razorspine Rattler seem to be his personal heros. After we were done playing, he grabbed my Viktoria crew and acted out a funny battle of his own, as if they were action figures, with dialogue and everything.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 420px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy4aiCg4cs9R0zmBZOnqFF9mene4oYVePclyNyDnpbKTwYBVqq0Mk9dcO3PE0RHGluKEV4ViNLqcNJFMOvtAalKDxjjR9bmJomk7oxu70iOIeAX7soGzQUCPOAvHzhNehzGyJ_x25uOXA/s320/child.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693979724723226642" />
The child entertains himself with a game of Werewolf while we play.

At any rate, we decided that in order to get the most playing in as possible we would just play with 25ss. I went with the Viks, Taelor, McTavish, a Ronin, and a Desperate Mercenary with 4ss remaining. Steph went with Perdita Ortega, Francisco Ortega, Abuela Ortega, and Nino Ortega with 6ss remaining with a cache of 2. Our shared strategy was deliver a message, and Steph and I forgot to choose schemes.

On the other side of the table our husbands were playing a game of Raspy vs. Marcus. We had recently picked up Raspy's avatar, and he actually got to use it! That thing is just mean!!

Back on our side of the table, we ended up playing in a "bog", and Steph and I had fun setting up the terrain. Here is the table... anywhere that was not elevated we considered to be water.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQiG7QgH_DzmkGmqOST1fah4ZfaAhnFAovptBhf0_fbJ4PobZZ-PVLTSZSgv8AGNFXBvLv4EvEoqeCLlBX_rzISd04GboOmsuH9wEMZfhuq0hpRixOQArJvt7SK4QEMuLpUcv1AgKR0cI/s320/malifauxtable.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693962243658869282" />

I have a blast playing with Steph. We invent little stories about the characters as we play, and why they react certain ways. We have decided that my Desperate Mercenary, who I have been calling Farah Fawcett because of her hairstyle, is Francisco Ortega's estranged wife... Farrah Fawcett-Ortega.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTuT4XJsef3rbDxmDuEUL4BVzvnQLBzmry031a-8wSiC6NHMcFAuqEe-VuTmCTk54TjMaJ30hCLDqEQoe1_X3XrgoxlIcJrNzjUNcJb4X-PVCxbOWlE_tCyu4QZPwFXTkYgOqjPniNFxI/s320/farahfawcettortega.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693966964118577234" />

Farrah calls out desperately for "Franco" as she charges across the bridge!

Perdita enjoyed putting a bullet between Farrah's eyes, even though she was trying to make ammends. No one hurts her brother!!

Other highlights of the game was Steph mining about six soulstones and managing to use them all during play, McTavish plinking off Ortegas with his 14 inch range, and Nino Ortega showing us all that he was brain damaged as he faced off against both Viks, Taelor and a Ronin. It didn't last long.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 420px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj57HfqGP1D4TWrZ6qvDZPqvLuuydHR_yRQn0yvMBbeEeM-D0CPm08GkjAAxkvGsmUHRaAED7KLe8qUAp44ZPbh1ihMC951AcXXHnKbQtYiysfch6POZZxPIhw7Al63yZqNe586aD8jw4c/s320/stupidnino.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693970712433521426" />

Silly, stupid Nino!!

We paused the game midway, so I could go to the grocery store and get something for the potluck. I picked up some whipped cream, cherries, marshmallows and walnuts, and whipped up some cherry fluff. It is my old stand-by when I don't know what to bring to a potluck or picnic! Yummmm potluck... I've always enjoyed them. We took a short break to eat, and then continued to graze on finger foods as we played.

Malifaux + Potluck = AWESOME. But back to the game!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigstGtlGzOH7k9xd_5uk_4tmTO4tqtgIhywDMy11JFaUGltnQnhU_9sRHba-4WOF2f0Cctg-dTcfb9RzlwAZA7GZyB29ER3JoPgwEFOqetb2JX0I4mV-6yuyueVK8v4d0KlgrR2iH-77E/s320/crew.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693972655479472642" />
The final showdown!

Eventually, I killed all of the Ortegas. Sadly, I still didn't win. Steph delivered her message one round before I did, so after the VPs were calculated all of my slaughter mattered not at all! Terribly depressing!

After the first game and the Munchkin break, my hubby played a game against another player who had come in later than us, and Chuck, Steph and I had a 3-way brawl. We decided to go with strictly box sets for some reason. Steph took Colette (with the intention of letting me finally play Perdita), Chuck took Kaeris, and I took... the Viks. I think I am honestly just starting to love them. Its a good feeling!

It was tough for me to shelf McTavish and go with just the box set, though! I love the model, and he has been working well for me so far.

I'm not gonna go into detail about this game, suffice to say that it lasted quite a while, and we had shared strategy treasure hunt. My scheme was announced frame for murder with Taelor, Chuck's was to kill Cassandra, and Steph's was to kill 3 constructs. So I killed Cassandra first, then plinked the constructs down until there were only two left, grabbed the treasure with Taelor and ran back to my side of the board.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheNaqD6Y-F42jeVF8IPE50WoKQhzSWT19kHoaEEZyBC4EKpSd2cwe3V0pHYTDgnC7g1rWZ9XN_m3mV9DEyy_xKKO61p97koXNh3mNnDg_eAVivVuxdwDiUUML2Ck36Hgv9wtncEKmYL8A/s320/taylorwins.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693975607711317426" />
Taelor brings it home! Yay!

The game ended at 12:30 am. We took a couple minute break to ring in the new year, and kiss our spouses. Then the first thing I did in 2012 is... WIN MY FIRST GAME OF MALIFAUX BY MYSELF since that initial game. Huzzah!!Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-68303052457954792082012-01-02T11:19:00.000-08:002012-01-02T12:20:43.104-08:00The Three ViktoriasAs much as I loved the idea of Raspy, I realized that I needed a crew that involved much less thought. Playing games with Raspy was extremely slow, as I had to constantly read over the cards, and could never seem to remember spells and abilities. I am absolutely not a quick learner, and I have absolutely no talent for strategy and rules. I am certain that I frustrated my opponents with this! Besides, all I really wanted to do was just charge into the fray and smack things with my ice golem. It got to the point that I was ignoring spells entirely, in favor of not having the frustration of dealing with them.

Well, that's certainly not how Raspy should be played!

Fortunately for the world, there is a variety of Malifaux crews out there to choose from. So when my husband (who is still absolutely in love with Marcus) decided that he would like to pick up another crew, I decided that I would like to as well. When we went to the gaming store to look at the box sets in stock, this time Colette was there. I felt a little pang of jealousy as my husband picked it up, knowing that while she was beautiful, she was far too complicated for me. I eventually settled on the Viktorias, though I wasn't fond of any of the models whatsoever, because it seemed as if their playing style was more in line with what I needed. Besides, my name is Victoria, and the thought of playing my namesake elicited a little giggle.

I decided that I would paint the Viktorias as Latinos, because I had been thinking about West Side Story since I had heard a selection from it on NPR earlier that day. This was a good decision for me, as after everything was painted, I realized that the colors of the models were what I disliked more than their shape. Except Johan. I still hate Johan... he looks like a dumbass. Its that stupid cloak!! And his... chest piercings.

About a week later, I decided that I would pick up some Ronin. I was happy to have them because I could get rid of Bishop, who was the only one who was entirely too complicated for me. I had them all painted (sans details and shading) in time for my second tournament, which was a pairs tournament that I entered with my husband.

Playing alongside him was a good experience for me, because he has a calming effect on me, and I think more clearly. He brought his new Colette crew to fight with my Viktorias. Together, we became "Team Johan is a Pimp" -- since he was the only male in play.

Our first game was against a team consisting of another set of Viktorias, and Som'er Teeth Jones. This was my first run-in with Som'er, and I must admit that the pigs delighted me! The Viktorias managed to get into a four-way melee.

Our second game was against Zoraida and Collodi. I got to see Zoraida's beautiful avatar, although it was never brought into play.

Results:

Viktorias + Colette vs. Viktorias + Som'er Teeth Jones = Team Johan is a Pimp wins!
Viktorias + Colette vs. Zoraida + Collodi = Team Johan is a Pimp wins again!

After all VPs were added up, my hubby and I got 2nd place. Really, he won 2nd place, and I was just along for the ride, but it was still a lot of fun to try and help him out!

After I finally finish the details on my Viktorias, I will get some pictures of them up. They are very nearly done, after 3 months of playing them and putting it off!

I'll also post pictures of my husband's Colette crew, who he has been letting me re-paint, because I begged him.

I've picked up two more crews in addition - Perdita, and Molly. Molly's crew isn't even fully assembled yet, though I have played her. Perdita is assembled, but my friend Steph has been stealing her, and I haven't had the chance to try her out yet! I've played many games against her, at Steph's hands!

The hubby has picked up some more as well. So in our house, we currently have Marcus, Rasputina, The Viktorias, Colette, Perdita, Kaeris, Molly and Ramos. I think we're officially addicted!!Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-38017622166659508222011-12-31T07:51:00.000-08:002011-12-31T09:27:25.436-08:00Rasputina's First Tournament!Our gaming store hosts "Malifaux Mondays", which is unfortunate for my husband and I, because we live well out of town, and I have to get up at 3am for work... so the only time we can game with other people is on Friday and Saturday - and we play D&D on Saturday evenings. However, there are occasionally Malifaux tournaments on Saturday afternoons, and so we make it a point to attend them so we can play with other people.

My second game of Malifaux ever was a tournament this past June. I had known about it for a few days, but with my school schedule (I work 60 hours a week and attend school part time) had not had time to paint my models, so the day of the tournament I went to work until 8am, got home a bit before 9am, and had to have my minis painted before 11:30 am.

Fortunately, I had had time to prime the models the day before. However, the primer was several years old, and extremely fuzzy. It wasn't a super great foundation to work on, but I didn't have time to do anything else.

Here is what my first experience with painting minis - and also coincidentally, my first experience with speed painting - looked like. In other words... A MESS!! Poor Raspy!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5n71D_wnjKy6A139E-SRZGtiNsQWGLo7Wjg93tCHkUDbn5QDSeWA05nsn2IPmBPK__lQLc1SYCmLKrdezEuFZXUYvC3HzFcXrrNjgivBBzB0yfdfHu-JeoiNZzGD9G8Fv0kYjznpXcYE/s320/raspy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692332970715361058" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIyTu6cDgyIrxW6dmnx1CSKiu4vbWLR21dKzKJTPMi4aeZGT06cHmqKE2BfGJ0y54lOfTmU31DLeLc_jfZNYCNVLM2dJTRNoqIZ4NsQf96WWCcy1tDA5rcnD0gcoE7hbjOwnN-y1r7h2A/s320/gamin.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692333638099262914" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_k_IkSZttVTXxZ7Gqyk8Si2259eU3IVLWKgRe7K8cyFKF0J8vnenNk_pZTPk9Ec6Mz3NQ-hwf725OMGDxzMmdjBij3amnHJu_b882S_bivV6jLtD0CZzthp4GKZJLqEHKiov0eJwU7Mo/s320/essence.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692333637773516434" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSIWA_7_tWGjmFX4TVi-Ql_QYBxJOaJbZr5If8T3EPsIJShnMYKln9n5J6Fb6Fob4JV_0p6n3NOl8kyTHATQJq-hvwAxKHudr8z8FwTPRJEbcKgDNfdGem6k3uiBjYpfIRhm1bd5uPmP0/s320/raspycrew.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692333635190476610" />

You'll have to trust me that the pictures turned out better than they are in person. Unfinished and shoddily painted, they were absolutely embarrassing to play!! Especially compared to my husband's Marcus crew that looks absolutely exquisite. Regardless, months later they are still unfinished. I plan on eventually stripping them and painting them up pretty.

The Essence of Power looks weird because I tried to use green stuff to add more swirlies of power around it. I was especially embarrassed of that model because it was only wearing two colors.

We arrived to the tournament five minutes late. Fortunately, they decided that my army was painted well enough to participate. Since everyone was paired up, my hubby and I played our first game against each other. I did my best to blast him to hell again, but between our first game and then, my husband had found time to read the rulebooks and think about tactics. Playing smarter this time, he absolutely decimated me. Arriving late as we did and trying to frantically start, we forgot to take time to choose schemes... something I regret to this day!

My next game was against Lilith. My opponent seemed quite afraid of my Ice Golem until he figured out that I didn't know what I was doing! After he figured that out, he was a kind and gracious opponent who helped me with rules and general game play. Losing to him was a pleasant experience.

My final game was against Zoraida. My opponent's models were all fantastically painted, and wonderful to look at! Playing against him wasn't very fun, however. He moved fast, spouting out rules and actions left and right, and it was very hard as a new player to follow along. He enjoyed rubbing his successes and my failures in my face, though I got the feeling that this was simply his personality, not that he was trying to be mean. He essentially controlled my ice golem the whole time and destroyed my own army with it!

So my tournament results:

Rasputina vs. Marcus = Marcus more or less trounces me! But I laugh a lot.
Rasputina vs. Lilith = Lilith wins, but I have fun killing a couple models and learning from a nice guy.
Rasputina vs. Zoraida = Not even a fun game, and a solid loss.

My husband's Marcus crew managed to come in 2nd place in the tournament, surprising many! Here is where I get back to regretting not taking schemes in that first game. It was a very close point total between first and second place, and those might have helped him win if he had completed a successful scheme!

I came in dead last!

What I learned:

* Choose schemes.
* You can't cast 3 ice pillars on the same turn.
* Lilitu is not a henchman!
* People are frightened of large models, regardless of their effectiveness.
* Ice gamin can kill your crew when they die!
* It is fun play Malifaux even if you lose, as long as your opponent isn't a jerk.
* The more special abilities a model had, the more I disliked it.
* I know nothing about strategy!
* Card sleeves and dry erase markers are your friend.
* Raspy was, at that point, too complicated for me to play.Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-86585134200139911082011-12-27T13:13:00.000-08:002011-12-31T09:23:14.901-08:00Rasputina Meets Marcus... and I Win My First Game!Surprisingly, we didn't immediately play a game the same day we bought our first box sets. It was our gaming night, and we had D&D to contend with. I showed Raspy to my brother while we were waiting for the others to show up at his apartment, and hoped that he would be more interested in her than he actually was. As fate would have it, it would be at least another six months before he gained some interest in her!

So the boxes sat for perhaps four days or so, and my husband and I decided that we would try a game. We didn't have a cleared off table in the house, so we decided to play on top of a large box, which was smaller than the 3 x 3 board we should have been playing on. For terrain, we used junk that we found around the house. The fate cards told us that we were fighting in a goblin village, so we used the lid from a 32 oz. fountain drink for a pond, an upside down cup as a silo, and so on. Surprisingly, I could visualize the village even with our haphazard improvised terrain. The final touch was a button for a treasure marker.

And oh, how we fought for that button! Our unpainted and unassembled crews rushed at each other, and I learned very quickly that Raspy could blast the hell out of things. Unfortunately, all I really did was cast December's curse over and over, and charge forward into melee with everything else.

It worked for my first game. My husband's strategy with Marcus was to rely on numerous attacks to plink me to death, and it just wasn't enough to contend with even my poorly played Raspy blasty smashiness.

He studied the rules afterward, and as an experienced gamer (and excellent strategizer) changed his playing style entirely. This was one of two games that he has ever lost with Marcus... he has won all the rest!

Contrarywise, this was the only game to this date that I have won on my own.

I am terrible with rules, and horrid with strategy!

I still love this game. Even losing game after game after game since.Victoriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02305115142222359101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5741370219789410816.post-47858858605469539372011-12-26T14:54:00.000-08:002011-12-26T15:19:16.752-08:00It begins...My husband has been heavily into Warhammer 40k (and Fantasy, to a lesser degree) for a number of years. I never really understood his miniature gaming hobby, though I occasionally went with him to various gaming stores to look at giant boxes of very expensive miniatures (GBoVEM's). He had mountains of GBoVEM's at home, so I didn't understand why he wanted more. Most of the GBoVEM's were unassembled and unpainted, and we had been carrying them about from place to place in the 4 years we had been living together. I knew that he had played with these expensive toys in his past life, but that leaving his home-state to move in with me, he had abandoned all of his good friends who shared this hobby with him.

It was out of guilt for this that I tolerated the occasional trip to a local gaming store which focused more heavily on miniatures and less so on the tabletop RPGs that interested me. I even occasionally let him buy more GBoVEM's, which also sat, unassembled.

Imagine my surprise when one day a trip to the gaming store, there was something that caught my eye! This is what I saw:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjebHugR_D_nVm4yUMkyY9r_qKiTHjvwTpVKJ89xyHalU4M3451riQ04CyN_QFDxOvz1mv6xbx6UXyIWK0ZlVBlJF66ctxFhF6x_ez4lMELzxW08I-TOd93XAYw8jUgYqkd29Cakm5TIy0/s320/1753-0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5690577470058608946" />

Ah, the Coryphee! Aren't they absolutely wonderful?! I fell in love with these deadly dancers immediately, and began to examine all the rest that Malifaux had to offer. I saw grotesque teddy bears and freakish children, plagued rats and samurai cowboys, undead whores and even a topless model with pendulous granny boobies. I was in love.

My husband, of course, encouraged my interest. We looked over the miniatures together, and it wasn't long before one of the store employees came over and began to tell us all about Malifaux. He was so enthused about it, that he rambled on for upwards of an hour. Before I knew it, my husband and I had picked out two starting box sets of our very own to take home.
